So apparently Brett Favre is back in the NFL, this time with the Minnesota Vikings. Which brings me to a burning question: Could he feed his ego anymore?

I mean, seriously, how many times does he need to hear other athletes say that they want him back because he can still play at a high level? Worse yet, why would he screw a quarterback who was essentially promised a shot at a starting gig with the Vikings, after sitting behind other quarterbacks for years just waiting for his opportunity? Or how about taking the job away from someone who was a high-round pick, and was developing into a franchise quaterback, and the face of the team?

The answer is simple: He needs to feed his ego. If you remember, he had that tearful “retirement” speech when he left the Packers. He said he didn’t have it in him anymore. Yeah right. He just didn’t have the guts to leave the sport because his ego needed to be buttered up like an Eggo waffle fresh out of the toaster.

Speaking of waffling, what’s with this “on again, off again” nonsense of whether or not he is returning? I can understand the first time when you realize that maybe you retired too early, and you still have something left. I can understand that.

However, what I take umbrage to is this: Saying one thing, but then doing something completely different, which was the case here.

And the Vikings themselves are just as much to blame as Favre. Favre played them for fools. Head coach Brad Childress looks like a complete idiot right now. Before this whole mess started, he signed Sage Rosenfels to a contract and a promise that he would get an equal shot to be the starting quarterback. Well, now that the egomaniac donning that purple and gold number 4 on his back is in town, he’s basically been misled and swindled out of more than just a starting spot. He could very well lose his roster spot if he ends up third or fourth on the depth chart. Tarvaris Jackson was drafted a few years ago to be the starting quarterback. And now, after years of training camps, regular season games, and repetitions, he now sees himself in the shadow of #4. And of course, Childress denied knowing that Favre was coming back. Yeah, OK.

In a way, I knew something was up when Brad Childress first stated that Favre was going to stay retired. It just didn’t set right with me because of past history. Favre ended up with the Jets the first time he decided to play this game, screwing with the development of then-starting quarterback Kellen Clemens. Now, after last season ended in a debacle, the Jets decided that Clemens may not be their guy, and drafted USC quarterback Mark Sanchez fifth overall this past April. You don’t think Favre had anything to do with that?

Let’s also not forget that he did sort of thing to his own team, making Aaron Rodgers wait a few years before getting his shot.

Now, in a cruel de ja vu, it happens again. This time he takes down two quarterbacks, one of whom (Rosenfels) deserves a chance to start because he’s been classy and professional throughout his career, sitting behind the likes of David Carr and Gus Frerotte, and waiting for his shot. And the other, who was drafted in the 2nd round in 2006 from Alabama State in the hopes that he would be a franchise quarterback. And to top this all off, #4 was quoted as saying that he didn’t want to teach any young quarterbacks. Tell me that’s not egomaniacal.

Wow. All I have to say is wow. How can you have anything positive to say about a high-maintenance prima donna that doesn’t care about anyone but himself. The timing of this is also quite tasteless. The Vikings have just ended training camp. Tell me that’s not a coincidence.

I don’t wish for anything bad to happen to Favre this year, to be honest. He’s still a great quarterback with a live arm, unless his rickety shoulder decides otherwise. He does make the Vikings better, on paper. However, what bugs me is this whole waffling thing that got old real fast, and also the dishonesty displayed by the Vikings to their quarterbacks. Suppose Favre gets hurt, then what? They now have to start a quarterback that can’t trust his head coach. The Vikings look really bad on this one, as does Favre. It looks like it has all the makings of an absolute disaster.

Well, so it goes. Minnesota has their “twin cities”, and now they have their twin village idiots as well.
